We report the case of a 41-years-oldwoman who presents an intraosseous cyst of the scaphoid discovered fortuitously to study the clinical, radiological and therapeutic aspects of this entity. Intraosseous ganglion cyst is a rare bone tumor and the lesion could often be missed. Ganglion cysts have been recognized for centuries; Hippocrates described them as being composed of “mucoid flesh.” 9 They are more common than synovial cysts and arise from tendon sheaths, ligaments, menisci, joint capsules, and bursae. The doctor The diagnosis could be delayed so proper radiologic investigation and index of suspicion is necessary .Differential diagnoses of painful cystic radiolucent carpal lesion are osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma and intraosseous ganglion. Helwig U, Lang S, Baczynski M, Windhager R: The intraosseous ganglion: a clinical pathological report on 42 cases. Scaphoid intraosseous cystic lesions represent a rare subset of carpal bone cysts. I recently had a bone scan done to determine whether or not a bone cyst in my scaphoid bone is bad enough to operate on. Some of these ganglia were occult on conventional radiographs and were detected only at bone scanning and MR imaging. Fig. Jahss M. Disorders of the foot. Chir Main 1998;17:255–8. Galasko CS. 20. CONCLUSION: Intraosseous ganglion cysts in … Epidemiology Tends to occur in middle age. There is a broad transcortical connection on the palmar side. An intraosseous ganglion (plural: ganglia) is a benign subchondral radiolucent lesion without degenerative arthritis. Kligman M, Roffman M: Bilateral intraosseous ganglia of the scaphoid and lunate bones. In the oblique-sagittal CT scan, the cystic lesion takes up a large portion of the internal structure of the scaphoid, which appears in danger of fracturing. One had a cystic lesion in the scaphoid, one in the hamate, and five in the lunate. Chantelot C, Laffargue P, Masmejean E, Peltier B, Barouk P, Fontaine C. Fracture of the scaphoid carpal bone secondary to an intraosseous cyst. 21. Cysts of the hand and wrist represent 60% of hand masses [1, 2].Their annual incidence is estimated to be 0.025% and 0.043% in men and women, respectively [].They are encountered in young adults, especially between 20 and 40 years old, but have been reported in patients between 3 and 89 years old [1, 3-6].There is a 2:1 female predominance. This article documents the outcome of treatment of intraosseous ganglia and simple bone cysts of the carpal bones by curettage and injectable calcium phosphate bone cement (CPC) grafting. Clinical presentation Patients may have mild localized pain. Subchondral bone cysts can happen with any type of arthritis, so rheumatoid arthritis can also cause it. It was found in 2003, when i had an episode of extreme wrist pain and presented myself to the doctor about it. Apropos of a case [in French].
